🦅 Powerful 500mm Reach
The lens provides the reach needed to capture small or distant subjects while maintaining flexible composition.
At 150mm, it works well for larger animals, nearby action and compressed landscapes. At 500mm, it can isolate birds, wildlife, aircraft and athletes from considerable distances.
When used on a Nikon DX-format Z camera, it provides a field of view similar to approximately 225-750mm on full frame.
⚡ High-Speed VXD Autofocus
Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear motor delivers fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
The lens supports compatible Nikon functions including Eye-Detection AF, subject recognition and continuous tracking. Its responsive focusing performance is particularly useful when following birds in flight, athletes and unpredictable wildlife.
A focus-limiter switch helps reduce focusing time when working with distant subjects.
✋ Three-Mode Vibration Compensation
Tamron’s VC system helps reduce the effects of camera shake when photographing handheld at long focal lengths.
Three operating modes are available:
-
Mode 1: Balanced stabilization for general photography
-
Mode 2: Designed for panning with moving subjects
-
Mode 3: Prioritizes stabilization during image capture
These options allow photographers to adapt stabilization to wildlife, sports and other specialized subjects.
🔍 Advanced Optical Performance
The 25-element, 16-group design incorporates one XLD element, five LD elements and specialized aspherical glass.
These elements help minimize chromatic aberration and color fringing throughout the extensive zoom range. Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating reduces flare and ghosting while maintaining strong contrast in backlit conditions.
🌼 Impressive Close-Focusing Capability
At 150mm, the lens focuses as close as approximately 60cm and provides a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:3.1.
This allows detailed photographs of flowers, insects and smaller wildlife while preserving a comfortable working distance.
At 500mm, it focuses as close as approximately 1.8 meters and offers a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:3.7.
🔒 Flex Zoom Lock
Tamron’s Flex Zoom Lock allows photographers to secure the zoom position quickly by sliding the zoom ring forward.
This helps prevent unwanted movement when photographing at steep angles or carrying the camera. A conventional lock switch secures the lens at its retracted position during transportation.
🎛️ Practical Telephoto Controls
The lens includes physical controls for demanding outdoor photography:
-
AF/MF focus-mode switch
-
Focus-limiter switch
-
Vibration Compensation switch
-
Three-position VC mode selector
-
Conventional zoom-lock switch
-
Flex Zoom Lock mechanism
-
Rotating tripod collar
These controls allow photographers to configure the lens quickly without entering the camera menu.
🛡️ Built for Outdoor Assignments
Moisture-resistant construction provides added confidence when photographing outdoors. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels moisture and oil while making fingerprints and dirt easier to remove.
The included tripod collar has an Arca-Swiss-compatible foot for direct attachment to many tripod and monopod heads.
🎒 Compact for a 500mm Zoom
The Nikon Z version retracts to approximately 8.4 inches and weighs roughly 1,720g with its tripod mount.
Its compact retracted length makes it easier to transport than many traditional 500mm zooms. The short zoom-ring rotation also enables quick movement between 150mm and 500mm.
🎥 Excellent for Wildlife and Sports Video
Quiet VXD autofocus, optical stabilization and flexible telephoto framing make the lens useful for wildlife films, field sports and outdoor documentary work.
For long recording sessions, the included tripod mount allows the lens to balance comfortably on a tripod, monopod or video head.

⚖️ How Does It Compare?
Compared with the Tamron 70-300mm RXD
The 70-300mm is substantially smaller and lighter, making it ideal for travel and everyday telephoto use. The 150-500mm provides considerably more reach, built-in stabilization and more extensive physical controls.
Compared with the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S
The Nikon begins wider, offers first-party S-Line integration and is more compact. The Tamron provides another 100mm of reach for small or distant subjects.
Compared with the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR
The Nikon provides another 100mm of reach and uses an internal zoom design. The Tamron begins wider, retracts to a significantly shorter length and is easier to transport.
Compared with a Fixed Super-Telephoto Prime
A prime lens may offer a brighter aperture and specialized professional performance. The Tamron provides flexible framing, easier transportation and a more accessible route to 500mm photography.
