Canon Cooling Fan CF-R20EP
The Canon Cooling Fan CF-R20EP is a specialized cooling, power, and networking accessory for the EOS R5 Mark II. Its active fan draws air through the camera’s dedicated cooling vents, extending recording time in demanding high-resolution video modes. It also accommodates two LP-E6P batteries and adds a high-speed 2.5GBASE-T Ethernet connection for professional production workflows.
Unlike Canon’s BG-R20 battery grip, the CF-R20EP is designed primarily for video and network operation and does not provide duplicate vertical-shooting controls.

❄️ Active Camera Cooling
The CF-R20EP aligns with the EOS R5 Mark II’s dedicated intake and exhaust vents. Its internal fan circulates air through the camera, helping remove heat generated during demanding recording.
Active cooling is particularly valuable when capturing:
-
8K RAW video
-
High-resolution oversampled 4K
-
High-frame-rate 4K
-
Long interviews and performances
-
Conferences and presentations
-
Continuous live productions
-
Extended indoor recording sessions
-
Video in warmer environments
The fan does not increase the camera’s image quality. Instead, it helps the camera maintain demanding recording modes for longer before reaching its thermal limits.
🎥 Longer Recording Sessions
When conditions and recording settings permit, the CF-R20EP can extend continuous EOS R5 Mark II video capture to approximately two hours.
Actual recording time depends on:
-
Resolution and frame rate
-
Recording format
-
Fan-speed selection
-
Ambient temperature
-
Available storage capacity
-
Battery condition
-
Previous camera use
-
Network and accessory activity
The accessory cannot guarantee unlimited recording, and thermal limits can still be reached under particularly demanding or hot conditions.
🌬️ Adjustable Fan Operation
Cooling settings are controlled through the EOS R5 Mark II’s menu system. This allows the camera to regulate fan activity according to the production environment.
Available operation can be configured for different priorities, such as maximizing cooling or reducing fan activity while recording.
The camera provides a fan-status indicator so the operator can confirm that the cooling system is functioning before beginning an important take.
🎙️ Fan Noise and Audio Recording
As with any active cooling system, the CF-R20EP produces some operating sound. Depending on fan speed, microphone position, room acoustics, and recording conditions, this sound may be captured in the audio track.
For productions requiring clean dialogue, we recommend:
-
Using an external microphone
-
Positioning the microphone away from the fan intake and exhaust
-
Using a boom microphone or wireless lavalier system
-
Recording separate audio when appropriate
-
Testing fan and audio settings before production
The fan intake and the camera’s exhaust opening should never be covered during operation.
🔋 Dual LP-E6P Battery Capacity
The CF-R20EP holds one or two Canon LP-E6P batteries. Two matching batteries provide extended operating time for the camera, cooling system, and network connection.
The LP-E6P is recommended because it provides the higher output required by the EOS R5 Mark II’s most demanding features.
Older LP-E6NH and LP-E6N batteries may provide limited operation, but important camera, cooling, networking, and video functions can be restricted. For reliable professional use, two genuine Canon LP-E6P batteries are the appropriate choice.
Batteries are sold separately.
🔌 Charging and External Power
With the Canon USB Power Adapter PD-E2, LP-E6P batteries can be charged without removing them from the CF-R20EP. The camera can also receive operating power through its USB connection while compatible batteries remain installed.
This is useful for:
-
Studio productions
-
Long interviews
-
Streaming
-
Conferences and lectures
-
Product demonstrations
-
Remote-camera installations
-
Extended recording from a fixed position
The camera cannot be powered through the USB adapter without a compatible battery installed in the accessory.
🌐 2.5GBASE-T Ethernet
A built-in RJ-45 Ethernet port supports network speeds up to 2.5GBASE-T when used with compatible network equipment and cabling.
Wired networking can provide greater reliability and consistency than wireless communication in crowded venues or professional production environments.
Supported workflows include:
-
FTP image and video transfer
-
Remote camera operation
-
EOS Utility connections
-
Studio network integration
-
News and event delivery
-
Authenticated professional networks
-
IPv6-compatible environments
Actual transfer speed depends on the camera, storage card, server, network infrastructure, cable, and other connected equipment.
🌦️ Professional Construction
The CF-R20EP features dust- and moisture-resistant construction designed to complement the EOS R5 Mark II.
This helps protect the connection points during professional assignments, but the camera and accessory are not waterproof. The cooling intake and exhaust openings must remain unobstructed and should be protected from rain, sand, dust buildup, and other debris.
