Canon Extender RF 1.4x

The Canon Extender RF 1.4x increases the focal length of compatible Canon RF lenses by 40 percent, giving wildlife, bird, sports and aviation photographers additional reach without requiring another large telephoto lens.

Designed specifically for the RF mount, it maintains communication between the camera and compatible lens for autofocus, exposure information and image stabilization. Its advanced seven-element optical design, weather-resistant construction and compact size make it an excellent addition to a serious telephoto kit.

⭐ Key Benefits

  • Increases focal length by 1.4x

  • Reduces the maximum aperture by only one stop

  • Maintains autofocus with compatible RF lenses and cameras

  • Maintains lens image stabilization

  • Preserves communication between camera and lens

  • Seven elements arranged in four groups

  • High-refraction, low-dispersion optical glass

  • Advanced anti-reflective lens coatings

  • Weather-resistant professional construction

  • Heat-reflective white exterior

  • Compact and lightweight design

  • Front and rear caps plus soft pouch included

🔭 Forty Percent More Reach

The extender multiplies a compatible lens’s focal length by 1.4 while preserving its basic handling and focusing characteristics.

Examples include:

Original Lens With RF 1.4x Extender
70-200mm 98-280mm
100-300mm 140-420mm
100-400mm 140-560mm
100-500mm 420-700mm within its compatible zoom range
200-800mm 280-1120mm
400mm 560mm
600mm 840mm

This additional reach is particularly valuable when approaching the subject is impossible, unsafe or likely to disturb wildlife.

☀️ One-Stop Reduction in Maximum Aperture

Attaching the RF 1.4x extender reduces the effective maximum aperture by one stop.

For example:

Original Maximum Aperture With RF 1.4x
f/2.8 f/4
f/4 f/5.6
f/5.6 f/8
f/8 f/11
f/11 f/16

The camera automatically recognizes the extender and displays the correct effective aperture. Exposure metering also adjusts automatically.

The one-stop light loss makes the 1.4x extender a useful balance between additional reach and retained low-light performance.

⚡ Autofocus Communication

Electrical contacts allow the extender to maintain communication between a compatible lens and EOS R camera.

Depending on the camera and lens combination, photographers retain:

  • Autofocus

  • Subject detection

  • Servo tracking

  • Lens information

  • Exposure metering

  • Image stabilization

  • EXIF focal-length and aperture data

Autofocus speed and coverage can change because the combination has a smaller effective aperture. Performance also depends on the connected camera, subject contrast and available light.

🛡️ Image Stabilization Support

Optical image stabilization continues to operate with compatible stabilized lenses.

The camera and lens recognize the increased focal length and adjust stabilization behavior accordingly. Coordinated stabilization may also remain available when supported by the specific lens and camera combination.

Because camera movement is magnified along with the image, careful technique remains important at extreme focal lengths.

✨ Advanced Optical Construction

The RF 1.4x uses seven elements arranged in four groups.

High-refraction, low-dispersion glass helps control field curvature and chromatic aberration introduced by magnifying the image. Optimized coatings reduce internal reflections, while a bonded three-element group minimizes the number of air-to-glass surfaces.

For the best results:

  • Use the extender with a sharp, compatible lens

  • Maintain fast enough shutter speeds

  • Focus carefully

  • Avoid heavy atmospheric haze or heat shimmer

  • Use a monopod or tripod when practical

🦅 Excellent for Wildlife and Birds

The extender provides a meaningful increase in subject size without the two-stop light loss of a 2x extender.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Small birds

  • Cautious wildlife

  • Nesting activity photographed responsibly

  • Safari photography

  • Animals across water or inaccessible terrain

  • Wildlife photographed from designated viewing areas

Its compact size also makes it easy to carry as an option when additional reach may be needed.

🏟️ Additional Reach for Sports and Aviation

Sports and aviation photographers can use the extender when fixed shooting positions leave subjects too small in the frame.

It is useful for:

  • Field sports

  • Motorsports

  • Surfing

  • Golf

  • Air shows

  • Aircraft in flight

  • Distant outdoor performances

Because the maximum aperture is reduced by one stop, photographers may need to increase ISO to preserve action-stopping shutter speeds.

🔍 Increased Maximum Magnification

The extender increases image magnification by 1.4x without changing the lens’s minimum focusing distance.

This can improve close-up framing for:

  • Butterflies and dragonflies

  • Flowers

  • Reptiles and amphibians

  • Wildlife details

  • Small outdoor subjects

For example, the RF 100-400mm increases from 0.41x to approximately 0.58x maximum magnification when used with the RF 1.4x extender.

🌦️ Weather-Resistant Construction

Weather-resistant sealing helps protect the extender when it is paired with appropriately sealed equipment.

The white heat-shield coating helps reduce heat absorption during extended outdoor use. The extender is weather resistant rather than waterproof and should still be protected in severe conditions.

Weather protection for the complete system depends on both the attached lens and camera.

⚠️ Selective Lens Compatibility

The Canon Extender RF 1.4x does not work with every RF or RF-S lens. Its protruding front optical assembly requires a compatible telephoto lens with sufficient internal clearance.

Compatible lenses include selected models such as:

  • RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z

  • RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM

  • RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM

  • RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM

  • RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM

  • RF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM

  • RF 600mm F4 L IS USM

  • RF 600mm F11 IS STM

Compatibility should always be confirmed for the exact lens model. It cannot be stacked with another RF extender.

🔒 Important RF 100-500mm Limitation

When the RF 1.4x extender is attached to the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, the lens is restricted to its 300-500mm range.

The combination therefore provides an effective range of 420-700mm. The lens cannot be retracted below 300mm until the extender is removed.

This is a physical clearance requirement and not a camera setting.

🆚 RF 1.4x vs RF 2x Extender

Feature RF 1.4x RF 2x
Focal-length increase 40% 100%
Light loss 1 stop 2 stops
Size and weight Smaller and lighter Larger and heavier
Autofocus performance Generally less affected More demanding
Image-quality impact More moderate More noticeable
Best suited to Balanced reach and performance Maximum possible reach

Choose the RF 1.4x when preserving light, autofocus performance and image quality is the priority. Choose the RF 2x when subject size and maximum reach outweigh the additional light loss.

🆚 RF Extender vs Cropping

Cropping avoids adding glass and does not change the lens’s maximum aperture, but it reduces the number of pixels used to represent the subject.

The RF 1.4x extender projects a larger image of the subject onto the sensor, potentially preserving more subject detail when technique, lens quality and atmospheric conditions are favorable.

The better option depends on:

  • Camera resolution

  • Available light

  • Subject movement

  • Lens sharpness

  • Focusing accuracy

  • Atmospheric conditions

  • Final output size
