🌎 One Lens for Almost Every Subject
The 24–240mm range covers a remarkable variety of photographic situations.
At 24mm, the lens captures an expansive field of view suited to:
-
Landscapes and cityscapes
-
Architecture and interiors
-
Group photographs
-
Travel destinations
-
Environmental portraits
-
Establishing shots
The middle of the range covers natural everyday perspectives and flattering portrait focal lengths.
At 100–240mm, it can capture:
-
Distant landmarks
-
Wildlife at moderate distances
-
Outdoor sports and school activities
-
Performances and events
-
Compressed landscape compositions
-
Details that cannot be approached closely
This breadth makes the lens especially valuable when traveling somewhere that lens changes may be inconvenient, impractical, or undesirable.
🧳 Designed for Travel
The RF 24–240mm replaces the focal-length coverage of several separate lenses while weighing approximately 1.65 pounds.
It allows travelers to move from a sweeping landscape to a distant architectural detail simply by turning the zoom ring. Fewer lens changes also reduce the possibility of dust reaching the camera sensor in windy, sandy, or crowded environments.
A zoom-lock switch helps prevent the lens barrel from extending while it is being carried.
📷 Full-Frame and APS-C Compatibility
On a full-frame EOS R-series camera, the lens provides its complete 24–240mm field of view.
When mounted on an APS-C EOS R-series camera, it provides an approximately 38–384mm-equivalent field of view. This makes it especially useful for portraits, outdoor sports, wildlife, and distant subjects, although it will not provide a true wide-angle view on an APS-C body.
🛡️ Five-Stop Optical Image Stabilization
Built-in optical image stabilization provides up to five stops of shake correction. This helps photographers produce sharper handheld images at slower shutter speeds, particularly toward the telephoto end where camera movement becomes more visible.
Stabilization is useful for:
-
Dim interiors
-
Evening travel photography
-
Distant static subjects
-
Museum and architectural details
-
Landscapes without a tripod
-
Handheld telephoto images
Image stabilization reduces blur caused by camera movement but cannot freeze an active subject. Faster shutter speeds may still be required for sports, wildlife, children, and other moving subjects.
🎥 Dynamic IS for Video
The RF 24–240mm was Canon’s first full-frame lens to incorporate Dynamic IS. This system improves stabilization during handheld movie recording, including footage captured while the camera operator is walking.
Dynamic IS combines with the lens’s broad zoom range to make it useful for travel films, family videos, documentaries, and casual event coverage.
Digital stabilization can narrow the recorded field of view on compatible cameras.
🎯 Fast Nano USM Autofocus
Canon’s Nano USM focusing system combines the speed required for still photography with the smooth, quiet operation preferred for video.
It delivers responsive autofocus for portraits, travel, and active subjects while providing controlled tracking and transitions during movie recording. Its low operating noise helps prevent autofocus sounds from becoming distracting when using an on-camera microphone.
Full-time manual focus is available with compatible cameras.
🔬 Advanced Optical Design
The lens uses 21 elements arranged in 15 groups, including one aspherical element and two Ultra-low Dispersion elements.
The aspherical element helps control distortion and spherical aberration while maintaining a manageable lens size. The UD elements reduce chromatic aberration and unwanted color fringing throughout the broad zoom range.
Compatible EOS R-series cameras can apply digital lens corrections to further improve distortion, peripheral illumination, and other optical characteristics.
🔍 Useful Close-Focusing Performance
At 24mm, the lens focuses as close as approximately 19.7 inches. At 240mm, it focuses as close as approximately 30.7 inches.
Maximum magnification reaches 0.26x at 240mm, making the lens useful for:
-
Flowers and plants
-
Food and tabletop details
-
Travel souvenirs
-
Crafts and artwork
-
Larger insects from a respectful distance
-
Wedding and event details
The long focal length also helps isolate close subjects against a simplified background.
🌤️ Variable f/4–6.3 Aperture
The maximum aperture begins at f/4 at 24mm and gradually becomes smaller as the lens is zoomed toward 240mm.
This variable-aperture design allows Canon to provide a 10x zoom range in a lens that remains practical for handheld and travel use.
In lower light, the stabilization system can assist with stationary subjects. Higher ISO settings, additional lighting, or faster lenses may be preferable when photographing moving subjects indoors.
🌸 Pleasant Background Blur
The seven-blade circular aperture produces pleasing background blur, particularly when the lens is used near 240mm with the subject relatively close and the background farther away.
The telephoto end compresses perspective and helps separate portraits, wildlife, flowers, and details from distracting surroundings.
🎛️ Focus and Control Ring
The electronic ring can be used for manual focusing or assigned through the camera menu to adjust a frequently used setting, including:
-
Aperture
-
Shutter speed
-
ISO
-
Exposure compensation
A selector switch allows the ring’s function to be changed quickly as shooting requirements change.

⚖️ Comparing Your Canon RF Options
Compared with the RF 24–105mm f/4–7.1 IS STM
The RF 24–105mm STM is smaller, lighter, and offers stronger close-up capability, including its specialized Center Focus Macro mode.
The RF 24–240mm provides more than twice the telephoto reach, faster Nano USM autofocus, and Dynamic IS. It is the more versatile one-lens travel solution.
Compared with the RF 24–105mm f/4L IS USM
The RF 24–105mm f/4L offers a constant aperture, professional L-series optics, weather-resistant construction, and more consistent performance throughout its range.
The RF 24–240mm provides substantially greater reach and eliminates the need to carry a separate telephoto lens. It prioritizes flexibility and convenience over professional L-series construction.
Compared with the RF 24–105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z
The RF 24–105mm f/2.8L Z offers a constant professional aperture, internal zoom, advanced stabilization, cinema controls, and superior low-light performance.
The RF 24–240mm is much lighter, more compact, and reaches considerably farther. It is designed for travel and everyday convenience rather than high-end production.
Compared with the RF 100–400mm f/5.6–8 IS USM
The RF 100–400mm provides substantially greater telephoto reach for wildlife, aircraft, and outdoor sports.
The RF 24–240mm begins at a true wide angle and can serve as an entire travel kit by itself. A photographer who regularly needs more than 240mm may pair a shorter standard zoom with the RF 100–400mm instead.
