Canon RF 600mm F11 IS STM Lens

The Canon RF 600mm F11 IS STM makes genuine 600mm super-telephoto photography remarkably portable and approachable. Its lightweight retractable design provides the reach needed for birds, wildlife, aviation, outdoor sports and the moon without the size, weight or cost of a professional super-telephoto prime.

A fixed f/11 aperture simplifies the design, while Canonโ€™s Diffractive Optics technology helps keep the lens compact. Five-stop image stabilization and quiet STM autofocus make it practical for handheld photography with compatible EOS R cameras.

โญ Key Benefits

  • True 600mm super-telephoto reach

  • Compact retractable design

  • Weighs approximately 2.05 pounds

  • Fixed f/11 aperture

  • Diffractive Optics technology

  • Up to 5 stops of optical image stabilization

  • Smooth and quiet STM autofocus

  • Compatible with Canon RF 1.4x and 2x extenders

  • Useful 0.14x maximum magnification

  • Customizable RF control ring

  • 82mm filter compatibility

  • Excellent introduction to super-telephoto photography

๐Ÿฆ… Genuine 600mm Reach

The 600mm focal length makes distant subjects appear substantially larger in the frame. It is particularly useful when subjects cannot be approached because of distance, safety or wildlife behavior.

Ideal subjects include:

  • Birds and wildlife

  • Airplanes and air shows

  • Field sports

  • Boats and water sports

  • The moon

  • Distant landmarks

  • Telephoto landscapes

  • Outdoor performances

On a Canon APS-C EOS R camera, the lens provides an angle of view comparable to approximately 960mm on a full-frame camera.

๐ŸŽ’ Compact Retractable Design

The lens retracts for transportation, making it much easier to carry than traditional 600mm lenses.

Before shooting, the barrel must be unlocked, extended into its operating position and locked again. The camera will not capture an image while the lens remains retracted.

At approximately 930g, or 2.05 pounds, it is light enough for many photographers to use handheld and carry on hikes, nature walks or trips.

๐Ÿ”˜ Fixed F11 Aperture

The RF 600mm uses a fixed f/11 aperture rather than an adjustable diaphragm. This design contributes to its compact size, light weight and accessibility.

Because the aperture cannot be changed, exposure is controlled using:

  • Shutter speed

  • ISO sensitivity

  • Exposure compensation

  • Available light

The lens performs best outdoors in daylight. Modern EOS R cameras can raise ISO when necessary while their electronic viewfinders maintain a usable viewing image at f/11.

โœจ Diffractive Optics Technology

Canonโ€™s dual-layer Diffractive Optics system helps control chromatic aberration while reducing the length and weight normally required for a 600mm lens.

The optical design uses ten elements arranged in seven groups. Canonโ€™s Super Spectra Coating helps reduce flare and ghosting while maintaining natural color and contrast.

Diffractive Optics can occasionally produce colored flare around extremely bright light sources, so using the proper lens hood is especially helpful.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Five-Stop Image Stabilization

The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to five stops of shake correction under Canonโ€™s specified testing conditions.

At 600mm, even small movements can shift framing significantly. Stabilization helps steady the viewfinder, making distant subjects easier to locate and follow while improving the likelihood of sharp handheld photographs.

Image stabilization reduces camera shake but cannot freeze a moving animal or athlete. Fast subjects still require an appropriately fast shutter speed.

โšก Smooth STM Autofocus

A stepping motor provides smooth and relatively quiet autofocus for still photography and video.

The lens works with compatible EOS R camera subject-detection and tracking systems, helping photographers maintain focus on birds, animals, people and vehicles.

Autofocus coverage may occupy a more centralized portion of the image area than with faster-aperture RF lenses. The exact coverage depends on the connected camera and extender configuration.

๐Ÿ”ญ RF Extender Compatibility

The lens accepts both Canon RF extenders.

With Extender RF 1.4x

  • Becomes an 840mm f/16 lens

  • Autofocus remains available with compatible cameras

  • Image stabilization remains available

  • Provides greater reach for very small or distant subjects

With Extender RF 2x

  • Becomes a 1200mm f/22 lens

  • Autofocus remains available with compatible cameras

  • Image stabilization remains available

  • Provides an exceptionally narrow field of view

Both extenders reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. Bright conditions, higher ISO settings and solid camera support are strongly recommended.

๐Ÿ” 14.8-Foot Minimum Focusing Distance

The RF 600mm F11 focuses as close as approximately 4.5m, or 14.8 feet, with a maximum magnification of approximately 0.14x.

Although it is not designed for macro photography, it can produce detailed photographs of birds, larger insects, flowers and wildlife while maintaining a comfortable working distance.

๐ŸŽจ Telephoto Background Separation

Although the aperture is fixed at f/11, the long 600mm focal length can still provide pleasing background separation.

For the softest background:

  • Work as close to the subject as practical

  • Keep the background far behind the subject

  • Choose a clean, distant background

  • Avoid placing the subject directly against foliage or structures

๐ŸŒ™ Moon and Distant Landscape Photography

The 600mm focal length is particularly well suited to photographing the moon. It can also compress distant landscape features, making mountains, trees, buildings and the sun or moon appear visually closer together.

A tripod and remote release can help provide more consistent framing for carefully composed landscape and celestial photographs.

The lens is not intended for direct solar photography without a properly certified front-mounted solar filter.

๐ŸŽฅ Super-Telephoto Video

Quiet STM autofocus and optical stabilization make the lens useful for recording distant outdoor subjects.

It can capture:

  • Bird and animal behavior

  • Aircraft

  • Outdoor sporting events

  • Boats

  • Moon footage

  • Distant performances

  • Nature observations

A tripod or monopod will generally provide smoother results during extended video recording.

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Customizable Control Ring

A dedicated control ring can be assigned to frequently used settings such as:

  • Shutter speed

  • ISO

  • Exposure compensation

Because the aperture is fixed at f/11, assigning the ring to ISO or exposure compensation can be particularly useful.
