🚀 Fast 0.1-to-0.9-Second Recycling
Fast recycling helps the EL-1 Ver. 2 remain ready during important sequences.
Canon specifies a normal recycle range of approximately 0.1 to 0.9 seconds with a fully charged LP-EL battery. This makes it particularly useful for weddings, red-carpet events and rapidly developing news assignments where missed frames cannot be repeated.
Recycle performance varies with output, battery charge, temperature and flash condition.
❄️ Active Internal Cooling
A built-in fan helps manage heat during repeated firing.
Under Canon’s specified testing conditions, the EL-1 Ver. 2 can provide bursts of up to approximately 170 full-power flashes before reaching its initial firing-restriction level.
Active cooling provides a major advantage for:
-
Rapid event coverage
-
High-volume portrait sessions
-
Step-and-repeat photography
-
Sports presentations
-
School photography
-
Commercial production
-
Long wedding receptions
Environmental temperature, modifiers, zoom position and output level affect sustained performance.
🔋 Rechargeable LP-EL Battery
The EL-1 Ver. 2 uses Canon’s rechargeable LP-EL lithium-ion battery.
Benefits include:
-
Approximately 340 full-power flashes
-
Consistent recycle performance
-
Five-level and percentage battery indication
-
Rapid charging with the included charger
-
Easy battery changes during assignments
-
Compatibility with the EL-5 battery system
The percentage display gives photographers more useful information than the basic low-battery warning found on many AA-powered flashes.
🎛️ Extraordinary 1/8192 Minimum Power
Manual output can be reduced from full power to an exceptionally low 1/8192 setting.
This wide range allows precise control for:
-
Wide-aperture portraits
-
Macro photography
-
Subtle catchlights
-
Close product photography
-
Multi-light balancing
-
Very short flash durations
-
High-ISO ambient-light work
-
Extremely rapid low-power sequences
During high-speed sync and optical wireless operation, the minimum available output is 1/128.
📷 E-TTL II Automatic Exposure
Canon E-TTL and E-TTL II metering automatically determine flash output according to the camera, lens and scene.
The system responds to:
-
Aperture
-
ISO
-
Subject distance
-
Lens focal length
-
Bounce position
-
Ambient exposure
-
Flash exposure compensation
Professional photographers can begin with automatic flash and then use Flash Exposure Memory to transfer the calculated output into manual mode for consistent results.
🎨 Flash Exposure Memory
Flash Exposure Memory captures the output calculated by E-TTL and transfers it to manual power.
A practical workflow is:
-
Photograph the subject using E-TTL.
-
Confirm the desired exposure.
-
Transfer the output into manual mode.
-
Continue shooting with consistent flash power.
This is particularly useful for portraits, formal groups and product photography where the distance remains stable.
☀️ High-Speed Synchronization
High-speed sync allows flash to be used above the camera’s normal flash-sync speed.
It is useful for:
-
Wide-aperture outdoor portraits
-
Backlit wedding photographs
-
Darkening bright backgrounds
-
Freezing action in daylight
-
Adding controlled fill light
-
Maintaining shallow depth of field
Effective flash range decreases during high-speed sync because the flash must emit a sequence of pulses as the shutter travels across the sensor.
⏱️ Second-Curtain Synchronization
Second-curtain sync fires the flash near the end of a longer exposure. This places ambient-light motion trails behind a moving subject.
Compatible wireless arrangements can also support second-curtain synchronization, depending on the camera and transmitter.
📡 Radio Wireless Sender and Receiver
The EL-1 Ver. 2 can serve as either a radio sender or receiver.
Its radio system supports:
-
Approximately 30m / 98 ft of range
-
Up to 15 compatible receiver flashes
-
Five flash groups
-
E-TTL II group control
-
Manual group control
-
Group mode
-
Linked shooting
-
Remote camera triggering
Radio signals do not require direct line of sight, allowing receiver flashes to be positioned inside modifiers, behind the camera or around structural obstacles.
💡 Optical Wireless Operation
In addition to radio control, the EL-1 Ver. 2 supports Canon optical wireless sender and receiver operation.
Optical transmission can be useful with older compatible Canon Speedlites that do not include radio functionality.
Optical control requires the receiver to detect the sender’s light pulses, so range and reliability can be affected by:
-
Bright sunlight
-
Physical obstructions
-
Receiver orientation
-
Distance
-
Reflective surroundings
Radio control is usually preferable when all flashes support it.
🔦 Adjustable Bi-Color Modeling Light
The built-in LED modeling light provides adjustable brightness and color temperature.
It can help photographers:
-
Preview the direction of shadows
-
Position an off-camera flash
-
Evaluate catchlights
-
Focus in dim environments
-
Visualize modifier placement
-
Match warm or cool ambient lighting
-
Add limited continuous illumination
It is intended primarily as a modeling and setup aid rather than a replacement for a high-output video light.
↔️ 24-200mm Zoom Coverage
The flash head automatically adjusts its beam to support full-frame focal lengths from 24mm to 200mm.
The built-in wide panel expands coverage to approximately 14mm. Manual zoom selection is also available when the photographer wants to concentrate or spread the light independently of the lens focal length.
🔄 Flexible Bounce Head
The flash head provides extensive movement:
-
Approximately 7° downward
-
Up to 120° upward
-
180° to the left
-
180° to the right
This allows light to be bounced from ceilings, walls and reflectors while the camera is held horizontally or vertically.
The included SBA-EL Bounce Adapter spreads and softens the light further when attached to the flash head.
🟠 Included Color Filters
Two included orange color filters help match flash illumination to warmer ambient sources.
They are useful in rooms lit by:
-
Tungsten lamps
-
Warm household lighting
-
Decorative venue lighting
-
Certain mixed-light environments
After fitting a warming filter, the camera’s white balance can be adjusted so the flash and ambient light appear more consistent.
🔌 External Power Support
The EL-1 Ver. 2 supports Canon’s optional CP-E4N Compact Battery Pack.
With compatible Ni-MH batteries installed in the external pack, recycling can be reduced to approximately 0.1 to 0.4 seconds while full-power capacity increases substantially under Canon’s test conditions.
This is useful for exceptionally high-volume professional assignments.
🔗 Professional Connections
Professional interface features include:
-
PC synchronization terminal
-
External power connection
-
Traditional Canon five-pin mounting foot
-
Metal locking foot
-
Camera-menu flash control
-
Radio and optical wireless control
These features allow the EL-1 Ver. 2 to integrate into both modern radio systems and established professional Canon lighting kits.
🌦️ Professional Weather Resistance
Weather-resistant sealing is engineered for professional use with appropriately sealed Canon cameras and accessories.
The flash should still be protected from heavy rain, immersion and severe environmental conditions. Complete weather protection depends on the camera, flash connection and any shoe adapter being used.
⚠️ Camera-Shoe Compatibility
The EL-1 Ver. 2 uses Canon’s traditional five-pin hot-shoe foot rather than the newer 21-pin Multi-Function Shoe foot found on the EL-5 and EL-10.
It works directly with many Canon cameras having a compatible conventional hot shoe. On selected Multi-Function Shoe cameras, Canon’s AD-E1 adapter may be required or recommended for secure mounting, full compatibility and weather sealing.
Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact camera. Some compact EOS R models do not provide traditional five-pin contacts and cannot operate the EL-1 Ver. 2 directly without the appropriate supported solution.
