Canon Speedlite EL-5

The Canon Speedlite EL-5 is a powerful, fast-recycling flash designed for compatible EOS R cameras equipped with Canon’s Multi-Function Shoe. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery, advanced E-TTL II exposure, radio wireless control and extensive manual power range make it an excellent choice for weddings, events, portraits and professional off-camera lighting.

With a guide number of 60 meters, zoom coverage through 200mm and approximately 350 full-power flashes per charge, the EL-5 provides serious lighting performance in a weather-resistant, intuitive design.

⚡ Powerful Guide Number 60 Output

The Speedlite EL-5 delivers a maximum guide number of 60 meters at ISO 100 with its flash head zoomed to 200mm.

This provides the power needed to illuminate:

  • Wedding groups

  • Event spaces

  • Portraits outdoors

  • Subjects photographed through light modifiers

  • Indoor sports at moderate distances

  • High ceilings during bounce flash

  • Large rooms

  • Off-camera lighting setups

Actual working distance depends on aperture, ISO, flash-head zoom, modifier use and surrounding surfaces.

🔋 Rechargeable LP-EL Battery

The EL-5 uses Canon’s rechargeable LP-EL lithium-ion battery rather than disposable AA batteries.

A fully charged battery provides approximately:

  • 350 full-power flashes

  • 0.1-to-1.2-second recycling

  • An accurate percentage-based battery display

  • More consistent performance than partially depleted AA batteries

The battery can be charged with a compatible Canon LC-E6-series charger, available separately.

AA alkaline and AA Ni-MH batteries cannot be used in the EL-5.

🚀 Fast Recycle Times

A recycling range of approximately 0.1 to 1.2 seconds helps the flash remain ready during rapidly developing moments.

Canon rates the EL-5 for bursts of approximately 85 full-power flashes before reaching its initial heat-restriction level under specified test conditions.

This performance is especially valuable for:

  • Wedding ceremonies

  • Receptions

  • Red-carpet events

  • School dances

  • Portrait sessions

  • News coverage

  • Rapid candid photography

Recycle speed and burst capacity depend on battery charge, flash power, temperature and shooting conditions.

📷 E-TTL II Automatic Flash Exposure

Canon E-TTL and E-TTL II metering automatically calculate flash output using information from the camera and lens.

This allows the flash to respond to:

  • Aperture changes

  • ISO adjustments

  • Subject distance

  • Bounce angle

  • Lens focal length

  • Camera exposure settings

Flash exposure compensation can be used to brighten or reduce the automatically calculated result.

🎛️ Extensive Manual Power Control

Manual output can be adjusted from full power down to 1/1024 power in normal synchronization modes.

Very low flash power is useful for:

  • Subtle fill light

  • Wide-aperture portraits

  • Close-up photography

  • Balancing several off-camera lights

  • Freezing extremely fast movement

  • Rapid recycling

  • Conserving battery capacity

During high-speed synchronization, the minimum available setting is 1/128 power.

☀️ High-Speed Synchronization

High-speed sync allows flash to be used above the camera’s normal flash-sync speed.

This makes it possible to:

  • Use wide apertures in daylight

  • Darken a bright background

  • Create shallow-depth-of-field portraits outdoors

  • Add fill light to backlit subjects

  • Freeze movement with a faster shutter setting

High-speed sync reduces effective flash range because the flash must pulse throughout the shutter’s travel.

⏱️ First- and Second-Curtain Synchronization

The EL-5 supports synchronization options including compatible first- and second-curtain operation.

Second-curtain sync places motion trails behind a moving subject rather than ahead of it, producing more natural-looking movement in photographs using slow shutter speeds.

Available synchronization modes depend on the camera, firmware and whether the flash is mounted directly or controlled wirelessly.

📡 Radio Wireless Sender and Receiver

The EL-5 can operate as either a radio sender or receiver in Canon’s radio-based wireless flash system.

It supports:

  • Approximately 98-foot transmission range under favorable conditions

  • As many as 15 compatible receiver flashes

  • Five wireless groups

  • Automatic or manually selected channels

  • E-TTL II wireless exposure

  • Manual group control

  • Remote flash triggering

Radio control does not require direct line of sight, making it more dependable than optical triggering when flashes are placed behind the camera, inside modifiers or around corners.

💡 Compatible Wireless Equipment

The EL-5 can work with compatible Canon radio wireless equipment, including selected:

  • Speedlite EL-1 and EL-1 Ver. 2 flashes

  • Additional Speedlite EL-5 units

  • Speedlite EL-10 units

  • Canon RT-series Speedlites

  • Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10

  • Compatible ST-E3-RT transmitter versions

Available features depend on the sender, receiver and camera combination.

🔦 Built-In LED Modeling Light

Two white LEDs provide a modeling light with five brightness levels.

The modeling light can help photographers:

  • Preview shadow direction

  • Position off-camera lights

  • Check catchlight placement

  • Focus in dim environments

  • Visualize the effect of a modifier

  • Add limited continuous illumination for close subjects

The modeling light is not intended to replace a high-output professional video light.

↔️ 24-200mm Automatic Zoom Head

The flash head automatically adjusts its beam to match supported lens focal lengths from 24mm through 200mm on a full-frame camera.

A built-in wide panel expands coverage to approximately 14mm.

The zoom head can also be adjusted manually when the photographer wants to:

  • Concentrate light into a narrower beam

  • Spread light beyond the lens’s field of view

  • Control spill

  • Create specialized off-camera effects

🔄 Flexible Bounce Head

The EL-5 flash head provides extensive movement:

  • Approximately 7° downward

  • Up to 120° upward

  • 180° to the left

  • 180° to the right

This flexibility allows light to be bounced from ceilings, walls and reflectors while the camera is held horizontally or vertically.

Bounce flash can produce softer shadows and more natural-looking illumination than direct frontal flash.

🪞 Catchlight and Wide Panels

The integrated catchlight panel can add a small reflection to a subject’s eyes while the main light is bounced.

The wide panel spreads the beam to cover an approximately 14mm full-frame angle of view. It is useful with ultra-wide lenses but reduces effective flash range because the same output is distributed across a broader area.

🎨 Flash Exposure Memory

Flash Exposure Memory allows an automatically calculated E-TTL flash level to be transferred to manual flash output.

This provides a convenient workflow:

  1. Begin with automatic E-TTL exposure.

  2. Capture or meter a correctly exposed test image.

  3. Transfer the output to manual power.

  4. Continue shooting with consistent flash brightness.

It is especially useful for portraits and events where the lighting distance remains relatively stable.

⚙️ Three Custom Flash Modes

Three custom modes—C1, C2 and C3—can store frequently used flash configurations.

Examples include:

  • Direct E-TTL event flash

  • Bounce flash settings

  • Manual off-camera portrait lighting

  • High-speed-sync outdoor fill

  • Radio sender configuration

Stored setups reduce menu changes when moving between different shooting situations.

📱 Camera and Remote Control

On compatible cameras, a dedicated Flash Menu Direct button provides quick access to flash settings on the camera display.

Selected settings may also be controlled through compatible remote-camera workflows, including supported Canon Camera Connect functions.

Available controls depend on the camera and firmware.

🌦️ Weather-Resistant Construction

Weather-resistant sealing helps protect the EL-5 during demanding professional assignments when it is mounted to appropriately sealed equipment.

The passive cooling design and internal airflow help manage heat during repeated firing.

The flash is weather resistant rather than waterproof and should still be protected from heavy rain and severe conditions.

⚠️ Multi-Function Shoe Compatibility

The Speedlite EL-5 uses Canon’s newer 21-pin Multi-Function Shoe foot. It does not have the traditional five-pin Canon hot-shoe connection.

Compatible cameras include selected Multi-Function Shoe-equipped EOS R models. Examples may include:

  • EOS R1

  • EOS R3

  • EOS R5 Mark II

  • EOS R6 Mark II

  • EOS R7

  • EOS R8

  • EOS R10

  • EOS R50

  • Other specifically supported cameras

Some cameras require current firmware, and not every camera with a physically similar shoe supports the EL-5. Canon specifically excludes certain products, including the EOS R5 C and some camcorders.

The AD-E1 adapter does not make the EL-5 compatible with older camera hot shoes. Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact camera before purchase.
