Nikon NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena Lens

The NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena is a premium portrait lens created to combine extraordinary subject detail with exceptionally smooth, circular bokeh extending across the entire image. Its name comes from the Latin term suggesting fullness or abundance, reflecting the lens’s rich and expressive rendering.

With its bright f/1.8 aperture, flattering telephoto compression and sophisticated S-Line optics, the Plena is designed for portrait, fashion, wedding and fine-art photographers seeking a distinctive visual signature.

🎨 The Meaning of Plena

Plena is only the second NIKKOR lens to receive a unique name, following Nikon’s legendary Noct.

Derived from a Latin word suggesting fullness or overflowing abundance, the Plena name represents the lens’s ability to fill the frame with dimensional detail, graceful transitions and richly rendered bokeh.

👤 Flattering 135mm Perspective

The 135mm focal length provides pronounced telephoto compression, creating flattering facial proportions and making backgrounds appear closer and more substantial.

Its longer working distance is especially effective for tightly framed headshots, outdoor portraits, fashion photography and candid moments where the photographer does not want to stand close to the subject.

✨ Circular Edge-to-Edge Bokeh

Plena is engineered to reproduce smooth, rounded out-of-focus highlights across nearly the entire frame, even when used at its maximum aperture.

Ordinary fast lenses can turn highlights near the frame edges into compressed or irregular shapes. Plena’s optical design minimizes this effect, creating a more consistent field of circular highlights and exceptionally smooth background blur.

🌙 Bright f/1.8 Aperture

The f/1.8 maximum aperture creates a very shallow depth of field, separating subjects from even complicated backgrounds.

It also gathers ample light for evening portraits, wedding receptions, stage performances and available-light photography. Photographers can work with faster shutter speeds or lower ISO settings when light levels fall.

🔍 Exceptional S-Line Resolution

Plena’s optical design consists of 16 elements in 14 groups, including:

  • Four ED glass elements

  • One aspherical element

  • One SR element

  • Elements treated with advanced anti-reflection coatings

These components suppress colour fringing and other aberrations while maintaining fine subject detail throughout the focusing range. The plane of focus remains crisp while transitioning smoothly into the surrounding blur.

☀️ Meso Amorphous and ARNEO Coatings

Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat reduce internal reflections caused by light entering from different directions.

These advanced coatings help preserve contrast and clarity when photographing into sunlight, around studio lights or in scenes containing bright point-light sources.

⚡ Fast Multi-Focus Autofocus

A multi-focusing system uses two stepping motors to provide quick and accurate autofocus. This precision is especially important when photographing at f/1.8, where the depth of field can be extremely narrow.

Quiet focusing also makes the lens well suited to wedding ceremonies, live performances and professional video production.

🌸 11-Blade Rounded Diaphragm

The rounded 11-blade diaphragm helps maintain smooth circular highlights as the aperture is adjusted.

It also contributes to the gradual, natural transition between sharp subject detail and out-of-focus areas that gives Plena images their dimensional appearance.

🎛️ Thoughtful Professional Controls

The lens provides controls designed for efficient professional operation:

  • Two customizable L-Fn buttons

  • Programmable control ring

  • Wide manual-focus ring

  • Autofocus/manual-focus switch

The function buttons are positioned for comfortable access in both horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

🎥 Cinematic Video Rendering

Plena’s combination of telephoto compression, shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh creates an elegant cinematic look for interviews, close-ups, performances and narrative filmmaking.

Quiet autofocus and smooth control operation support professional video workflows, while the lens’s high resolving power is suitable for detailed 4K and 8K capture.

🏗️ Premium Construction

The engraved Plena name and metallic exterior details distinguish the lens as one of Nikon’s most carefully crafted S-Line designs.

Dust- and drip-resistant construction provides confidence during demanding professional assignments. At approximately 995g, the lens remains manageable while balancing particularly well on full-sized Nikon Z bodies.
