Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens

The NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR delivers the extended reach wildlife, bird and sports photographers need in a stable, internal-zoom design. Its broad telephoto range makes it easy to locate a moving subject at 180mm and then zoom in for a tightly framed image at 600mm.

Fast autofocus, 5.5-stop Vibration Reduction and excellent handling make this a highly capable handheld super-telephoto lens. Compatibility with Nikon Z teleconverters extends its reach as far as 1,200mm for exceptionally distant subjects.

⭐ Key Benefits

  • Expansive 180–600mm super-telephoto range

  • Internal zoom maintains the lens’s length and balance

  • Short 70-degree zoom-ring rotation

  • 5.5-stop optical Vibration Reduction

  • Fast and quiet stepping-motor autofocus

  • Compatible with Nikon Z 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters

  • 840mm maximum reach with the TC-1.4x

  • 1,200mm maximum reach with the TC-2.0x

  • Customizable function buttons and control ring

  • Removable rotating tripod collar

  • Fluorine-coated front element

  • 95mm filter thread

🦅 Exceptional 600mm Reach

The lens’s extensive zoom range provides the flexibility to photograph subjects at varying distances without changing lenses.

The 180mm position makes it easier to locate birds, athletes and vehicles in the viewfinder. A quick turn of the zoom ring brings the subject in close at 600mm, capturing fine details that would otherwise be difficult to see.

On a Nikon DX-format Z camera, the lens provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 270–900mm.

🔄 Internal Zoom Design

Unlike lenses that extend as they zoom, the 180-600mm maintains the same physical length throughout its range. This helps protect the lens from environmental contaminants while providing consistent balance and handling.

Internal zooming is particularly useful when shooting from a tripod, monopod, beanbag or vehicle window. It also prevents the lens from becoming front-heavy at longer focal lengths.

⚡ Fast 70-Degree Zoom Operation

Only a 70-degree turn of the zoom ring is required to move from 180mm to 600mm. This short rotation allows photographers to reframe quickly without changing their grip.

It is especially useful when a bird takes flight, an athlete moves across the field or a subject rapidly approaches the camera.

🛡️ 5.5-Stop Vibration Reduction

Built-in optical Vibration Reduction provides up to 5.5 stops of stabilization, helping produce sharper handheld photographs at long focal lengths.

Normal VR is suitable for stationary and generally moving subjects, while Sport VR provides a stable viewfinder image during continuous shooting and unpredictable action.

🎯 Fast, Quiet Autofocus

A stepping motor delivers quick and accurate autofocus while operating quietly. Combined with the subject-detection capabilities of Nikon Z cameras, the lens can reliably follow birds, animals, vehicles and athletes.

Quiet operation also benefits wildlife filmmaking and other situations where unnecessary lens noise could disturb the subject or be captured by a microphone.

🔍 Detailed Optical Performance

The optical design consists of 25 elements in 17 groups, including six ED glass elements and one aspherical element. These specialized components help control chromatic aberration and maintain sharpness throughout the zoom range.

A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel moisture, dust, fingerprints and other contaminants encountered during outdoor assignments.

🌸 Useful Close-Focusing Ability

The minimum focusing distance ranges from approximately 1.3m at 180mm to 2.4m at 600mm.

A maximum reproduction ratio of 0.25x allows detailed photographs of flowers, insects, reptiles and smaller wildlife while maintaining a comfortable working distance.

🔭 Teleconverter Compatibility

For situations requiring even greater reach, the lens supports both Nikon Z teleconverters:

  • With the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x: 252–840mm f/8-9

  • With the Z Teleconverter TC-2.0x: 360–1,200mm f/11-13

Autofocus performance with a teleconverter can vary according to the camera body, subject contrast and available light.

🎛️ Convenient Lens Controls

The lens provides direct access to frequently used functions:

  • Four customizable L-Fn buttons

  • Programmable control ring

  • Focus-mode switch

  • Focus-limit switch

  • VR mode selection

  • Removable rotating tripod collar

The four function buttons are positioned around the barrel so the selected function remains accessible when shooting horizontally or vertically.

🎥 Wildlife and Sports Video

Internal zooming keeps the center of gravity stable while reframing, making the lens easier to use on a fluid head or other support system.

Quiet autofocus, optical stabilization and smooth control operation make it well suited to wildlife documentaries, outdoor sports and long-distance video work.
