Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary Lens for Sony E
The Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary brings substantial telephoto reach to full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras in a relatively compact and portable design. Its combination of responsive autofocus, optical stabilization and excellent image quality makes it a versatile choice for wildlife, outdoor sports, aviation, landscapes and travel.

🦅 Reach for Wildlife and Action
The 100-400mm focal range provides the reach needed to photograph distant subjects while preserving enough flexibility for changing compositions.
At 100mm, the lens works well for larger animals, landscapes and nearby action. At 400mm, it can isolate birds, athletes, aircraft and other distant subjects while compressing the background.
🎒 Portable Super-Telephoto Performance
Weighing approximately 1,140g, the lens is relatively lightweight for a full-frame zoom reaching 400mm. Its manageable size makes it suitable for handheld photography, hiking, travel and extended outdoor assignments.
The 67mm filter thread also keeps polarizing and protective filters smaller and more affordable than those required by many large telephoto lenses.
✋ Optical Stabilization
Sigma’s Optical Stabilizer system helps reduce visible camera shake when working handheld at long focal lengths.
Two stabilization modes are available:
-
OS Mode 1: General handheld photography
-
OS Mode 2: Panning with moving subjects
Panning stabilization is particularly useful for motorsports, aviation, wildlife and athletes moving predictably across the frame.
⚡ Fast, Quiet Autofocus
A stepping motor provides smooth, responsive and quiet autofocus for still photography and video. The lens supports compatible Sony autofocus features, including Eye AF, subject recognition and continuous tracking.
The focus-limiter switch can restrict the focusing range, helping the camera acquire distant subjects more quickly.
🔍 Advanced Optical Design
The optical design incorporates one FLD element and four SLD elements to reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing throughout the zoom range.
Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes flare and ghosting while maintaining strong contrast when photographing backlit subjects or working around bright stadium and stage lighting.
🌼 Impressive Close-Focusing Performance
The lens focuses as close as approximately:
-
1.12 meters at 100mm
-
1.6 meters at 400mm
Maximum magnification reaches approximately 1:4.1, making the lens useful for flowers, insects, reptiles and other smaller subjects that cannot easily be approached.
Its long working distance also helps avoid disturbing sensitive wildlife.
🔄 Dual-Action Zoom
The lens can be zoomed conventionally by rotating the zoom ring or quickly adjusted by pushing and pulling the lens hood.
Push-pull operation can make it easier to react when a subject rapidly changes distance, while the traditional zoom ring provides controlled framing for slower, more deliberate compositions.
🎛️ Practical Physical Controls
The lens includes several controls for demanding telephoto photography:
-
AF/MF focus-mode switch
-
Focus-limiter switch
-
Customizable AFL button
-
Optical-stabilization switch
-
OS Mode 1 and Mode 2 selector
-
Custom Mode selector
-
Zoom-lock switch
Selected functions can be customized with compatible Sigma accessories and software.
🎥 Useful for Outdoor Video
The telephoto range is well suited to wildlife footage, outdoor sports, performances and compressed landscape scenes. Quiet autofocus and optical stabilization help produce smoother, more stable handheld footage.
For extended recording sessions, a tripod or monopod is recommended.
🛡️ Designed for Outdoor Photography
A dust- and splash-resistant structure provides added confidence when working outdoors. The front element includes a water- and oil-repellent coating that makes moisture, fingerprints and dirt easier to remove.
A durable brass bayonet provides a secure, precise connection to the camera.

⚖️ How Does It Compare?
Compared with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports
The 70-200mm provides a brighter constant f/2.8 aperture, stronger low-light performance and greater background separation. The 100-400mm offers twice the maximum reach while remaining relatively portable.
Compared with a 150-600mm Zoom
A 150-600mm lens provides substantially more reach for small or distant wildlife. The 100-400mm is smaller, lighter and easier to carry while hiking or traveling.
Compared with a 70-300mm Zoom
A 70-300mm begins wider and may be more compact. The Sigma provides an additional 100mm of reach, which can make a meaningful difference for birds, wildlife and field sports.
Compared with a Fixed Super-Telephoto Prime
A prime lens may offer a brighter aperture and greater specialized performance. The 100-400mm provides flexible framing, easier transportation and a more approachable size for everyday telephoto photography.
