Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF — Last One!

LAST ONE! This lens has been discontinued by Sigma and is no longer being manufactured. Our remaining new lens is available only while supplies last.

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a professional portrait prime for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras. Its bright f/1.4 aperture, outstanding sharpness and beautifully rendered background blur make it an exceptional choice for portraits, weddings, fashion and available-light photography.

It can also be used on Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras with a compatible Canon EF-to-EOS R mount adapter, giving photographers a way to continue using this highly regarded Art-series lens on newer Canon bodies.

👤 A Classic Portrait Focal Length

The 85mm focal length has long been favored by professional portrait photographers. It provides a comfortable working distance while producing flattering facial proportions and natural telephoto compression.

On a full-frame Canon camera, it is ideal for headshots, half-length portraits, fashion and candid photography. On an APS-C Canon DSLR, it provides a tighter field of view equivalent to approximately 136mm.

🌙 Bright f/1.4 Maximum Aperture

The wide f/1.4 aperture gathers abundant light, allowing photographers to maintain faster shutter speeds and lower ISO settings when working indoors or after sunset.

It also creates an exceptionally shallow depth of field. Subjects can be isolated against smooth backgrounds while retaining crisp detail around the eyes and face.

🔍 Professional Art-Series Optics

The sophisticated optical design incorporates 14 elements arranged in 12 groups, including specialized low-dispersion and aspherical glass.

These elements help minimize chromatic aberration, distortion, color fringing and other optical imperfections. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting while maintaining excellent contrast around bright light sources.

The lens is designed to deliver exceptional resolution for high-megapixel cameras.

🌸 Beautiful Background Rendering

A nine-blade rounded diaphragm produces smooth out-of-focus areas and attractive highlight rendering. Combined with the 85mm perspective and f/1.4 aperture, it creates the rich background blur associated with professional portrait photography.

Transitions between focused and defocused areas appear natural, helping subjects retain a dimensional, lifelike appearance.

⚡ Hyper Sonic Motor Autofocus

Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor delivers fast and quiet autofocus for portraits, weddings and event photography. Full-time manual-focus override allows the photographer to make precise adjustments without first changing the focus-mode switch.

The lens is compatible with phase-detection autofocus on supported Canon EOS cameras.

🌼 Close-Focusing Performance

The lens focuses as close as approximately 85cm and offers a maximum magnification of approximately 1:8.5.

This working distance is suitable for tightly framed portraits, wedding details, fashion accessories and product photography, although the lens is not intended to replace a dedicated macro lens.

🔄 Canon EOS R Compatibility

When paired with a compatible Canon EF-to-EOS R mount adapter, the lens can be used on Canon EOS R-series mirrorless cameras while retaining electronic communication, autofocus and aperture control.

This makes it a compelling option for photographers who have transitioned to mirrorless but still appreciate the rendering and performance of Sigma’s EF-mount Art lenses.

🛡️ Professional Construction

The substantial barrel is built for demanding professional use. A durable brass bayonet provides a precise connection to the camera, while the broad manual-focus ring allows smooth, accurate adjustments.

At approximately 2.5 pounds, this is a substantial portrait lens designed for photographers who prioritize optical performance. It accepts 86mm filters.

👤 Ideal For

  • Professional portrait photographers

  • Wedding and event photography

  • Fashion and beauty photography

  • Senior and graduation portraits

  • Available-light photography

  • Editorial and commercial assignments

  • Concerts and stage performances

  • Canon DSLR photographers

  • Canon EOS R users with an EF-to-RF adapter

  • Collectors seeking discontinued Sigma Art lenses

⚖️ How Does It Compare?

Compared with a 50mm f/1.4 Prime

A 50mm lens is easier to use in confined spaces and includes more of the surrounding environment. The 85mm provides more flattering compression, a longer working distance and stronger subject separation for traditional portraits.

Compared with a 70-200mm f/2.8 Zoom

The zoom offers greater framing flexibility and considerably more reach. The 85mm prime gathers substantially more light and creates shallower depth of field at f/1.4.

Compared with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

The newer DG DN version was designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras and is significantly smaller and lighter. This DG HSM version mounts directly to Canon EF cameras and can also be adapted to Canon EOS R bodies.

Compared with Canon’s EF 85mm Portrait Lenses

The Sigma emphasizes extremely high resolution, strong contrast and professional Art-series construction. Its f/1.4 aperture provides a balance between bright low-light performance and pronounced background blur.
