Sony FE 8–14mm F3.5 Fisheye G Lens

The Sony FE 8–14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is Sony’s first full-frame E-mount fisheye zoom lens, offering an extraordinary range of creative perspectives in one compact optic. At 8mm, it produces a full circular fisheye image; zooming to 14mm creates a dramatic, frame-filling diagonal fisheye view.

Its expansive 180° coverage and expressive curvilinear distortion make it a powerful choice for architecture, landscapes, action sports, concerts, creative portraits, filmmaking, and immersive VR production. A constant f/3.5 aperture, advanced G Lens optics, fast autofocus, and close-focusing capability provide dependable performance for both still photography and video.

Circular to Diagonal Fisheye in One Lens

The 8–14mm zoom range allows photographers and filmmakers to adjust the fisheye effect without changing lenses.

At 8mm, the lens creates a complete circular image within the full-frame sensor area, capturing an extraordinary 180° field of view in every direction. At 14mm, the image expands to fill the frame diagonally while retaining the bold curvature and exaggerated perspective associated with a fisheye lens.

Intermediate focal lengths provide additional creative control, making it easier to match the composition to the subject and environment.

Expressive 180° Perspective

Unlike a rectilinear ultra-wide lens that attempts to keep straight lines straight, the FE 8–14mm deliberately uses pronounced curvilinear distortion as a creative tool.

Moving close to the subject emphasizes foreground elements while sweeping backgrounds curve dramatically through the composition. This distinctive rendering can transform familiar spaces, architecture, skies, landscapes, and action scenes into immersive images with a strong sense of depth.

Advanced G Lens Optics

A sophisticated 16-element, 13-group optical design uses ED and aspherical elements to maintain high resolution while reducing chromatic aberration and color fringing throughout the image area.

Sony’s G Lens engineering provides excellent detail and contrast across the zoom range while preserving the distinctive rendering that makes a fisheye lens such a powerful creative tool.

Constant F3.5 Aperture

The constant f/3.5 maximum aperture remains available throughout the entire zoom range. Exposure does not change as the lens is zoomed, which is particularly helpful when recording video or working with manually controlled lighting.

A seven-blade circular diaphragm contributes to smooth rendering in out-of-focus areas when working close to a subject.

Dynamic Close-Up Perspectives

The lens focuses as close as 0.15m, or approximately six inches, and provides a maximum magnification of 0.22x.

This close-focusing capability allows a small foreground subject to appear dramatically emphasized while an enormous area of the surrounding environment remains visible—ideal for creative nature photography, action shots, products, and unusual environmental portraits.

Fast, Quiet Autofocus

A linear-motor focusing system delivers fast and accurate autofocus for still photography while remaining quiet enough for video production.

The lens supports Sony’s advanced subject-recognition and tracking capabilities on compatible Alpha cameras. Linear Response MF provides a natural, predictable response when precise manual focusing is preferred.

Designed for Filmmaking

Minimal focus breathing helps maintain consistent framing during focus transitions. Quiet autofocus and aperture operation reduce unwanted mechanical noise when recording with an on-camera or nearby microphone.

Its compact design balances comfortably on handheld cameras, gimbals, and production rigs, while the constant aperture simplifies exposure control during zoom adjustments.

Professional Lens Controls

The lens provides direct physical controls for efficient still and video operation:

  • Manual focusing ring

  • Zoom ring

  • Aperture ring

  • Aperture click/de-click switch

  • Focus-hold button

  • AF/MF focus-mode switch

  • Zoom-lock switch

The aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, quiet iris adjustments during video recording.

Compact Design for VR Production

The lens barrel measures only 63.1mm in diameter, allowing two lenses to be positioned approximately 64mm apart in a compatible dual-camera arrangement. This spacing closely matches the average distance between human eyes and supports natural-looking stereoscopic 3D and VR capture.

Its extremely wide fisheye coverage helps create an immersive sense of space and depth for specialized virtual-reality productions.

Ready for Location Work

Despite its specialized coverage and professional optical design, the FE 8–14mm weighs only approximately 314g. Its compact size makes it easy to carry for travel, location work, and everyday creative shooting.

Dust- and moisture-resistant construction improves reliability in challenging environments, while a fluorine coating on the front element helps resist fingerprints, oil, moisture, and debris.

Rear Filter Capability

The curved front element does not accept conventional screw-in filters. A rear filter holder allows cut gelatin filters to be used when specialized filtration is required.

Sony includes a filter template to help users cut compatible filter material to the correct dimensions.

How It Compares

Compared with a Fixed Fisheye Lens

A conventional fisheye prime provides only one angle of view and rendering style. The Sony FE 8–14mm allows creators to move continuously between circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives without changing lenses.

Compared with a Rectilinear Ultra-Wide Lens

A rectilinear lens attempts to preserve straight lines and provide a more natural architectural perspective. The FE 8–14mm intentionally curves lines and exaggerates perspective for a much more dramatic, immersive visual effect.

Compared with an APS-C Fisheye

The FE 8–14mm is designed to cover a full-frame sensor and provides true circular fisheye imagery at 8mm. It can also be used on APS-C Sony cameras, where it offers a 12–21mm-equivalent angle of view with reduced sensor coverage compared with full frame.
