Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens for Sony E
The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD is a compact ultra-wide zoom for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras. Its constant f/2.8 aperture, lightweight construction and excellent optical performance make it a strong choice for landscapes, architecture, interiors, astrophotography and video production.
An internal zoom mechanism maintains the lens’s physical length while zooming, providing consistent balance for handheld photography, tripod work and gimbal-mounted video.

🌎 Expansive Ultra-Wide Perspective
The 17-28mm range is ideal for scenes where space, scale and dramatic perspective are important.
At 17mm, it captures sweeping landscapes, architecture, interiors and night skies. At 28mm, it provides a more natural wide-angle view for environmental portraits, travel and documentary photography.
🌙 Constant f/2.8 Aperture
The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture remains available throughout the zoom range. This provides consistent exposure while zooming and improved performance in low-light environments.
The wide aperture is especially valuable for astrophotography, indoor events, evening cityscapes and video production.
🔍 Excellent Optical Performance
The advanced 13-element, 11-group design incorporates low-dispersion, glass-molded aspherical and hybrid aspherical elements.
These specialized elements help minimize chromatic aberration, distortion and color fringing. Tamron’s BBAR coating reduces flare and ghosting while maintaining strong contrast around bright light sources.
⚡ Fast and Quiet RXD Autofocus
Tamron’s Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive provides smooth, accurate and quiet autofocus for still photography and video.
The lens supports compatible Sony features including Eye AF, Fast Hybrid AF and continuous subject tracking. Quiet operation is particularly useful for ceremonies, interviews and video recording.
🔄 Internal Zoom Design
The lens maintains its physical length while zooming. This provides consistent balance and prevents the barrel from extending during use.
Internal zooming is especially helpful when the lens is mounted on a gimbal, tripod or video rig. It also provides additional protection against dust and moisture entering through an extending barrel.
🌼 Close-Focusing Capability
The lens focuses as close as approximately 19cm throughout the zoom range. At 17mm, it provides a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:5.2.
This allows photographers to place a foreground subject close to the lens while retaining an expansive view of the surrounding environment.
🎒 Compact and Lightweight
At approximately 420g, the lens is remarkably portable for a full-frame constant-f/2.8 ultra-wide zoom.
Its compact dimensions balance comfortably on Sony Alpha cameras and make it easy to carry for travel, hiking, real-estate assignments and handheld video.
🎥 Excellent for Video Production
The ultra-wide range is ideal for establishing shots, interiors, real-estate walkthroughs and handheld content creation. Quiet autofocus and an internal zoom design make it especially useful on gimbals.
The lens does not include optical stabilization, so it benefits from a Sony camera with in-body stabilization or an external support system.
🛡️ Designed for Outdoor Use
Moisture-resistant construction provides added confidence when photographing outdoors. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels moisture and oil while making fingerprints and dirt easier to remove.
The lens accepts standard 67mm filters, matching many other Tamron mirrorless lenses.

⚖️ How Does It Compare?
Compared with a 16-35mm Zoom
A 16-35mm begins slightly wider and extends farther into the standard range. The Tamron is exceptionally compact and lightweight while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture.
Compared with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2
The 28-75mm is a more versatile everyday standard zoom. The 17-28mm provides the dramatically wider perspective needed for architecture, interiors and expansive landscapes.
Compared with an Ultra-Wide Prime
A prime may offer a brighter aperture or smaller dimensions. The Tamron provides flexible framing from 17mm through 28mm without requiring a lens change.
Compared with an APS-C Ultra-Wide Zoom
The 17-28mm is designed to cover a full-frame sensor. On an APS-C Sony camera, it provides an approximately 25.5-42mm-equivalent field of view and no longer functions as a true ultra-wide lens.
