Tamron 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Nikon Z

The Tamron 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is a compact full-frame zoom designed around the focal lengths portrait photographers use most. It combines the environmental perspective of 35mm with classic 50mm, 85mm and 100mm portrait views—all with a bright constant f/2.8 aperture.

Weighing only approximately 575g, it provides a compelling alternative to carrying several prime lenses or a much larger professional zoom. It is ideal for portraits, travel, events, family photography and hybrid content creation.

✨ Key Benefits

  • Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture

  • Designed for full-frame Nikon Z cameras

  • Fast and precise VXD autofocus

  • Excellent resolution throughout the zoom range

  • Smooth nine-blade rounded diaphragm

  • Minimum focusing distance of approximately 22cm

  • Maximum magnification of approximately 1:3.3

  • Compatible with Tamron Lens Utility

  • Moisture-resistant construction

  • Fluorine-coated front element

  • Excellent for photography and video

👤 Four Classic Perspectives in One Lens

The 35-100mm range incorporates several focal lengths commonly associated with portrait photography:

  • 35mm: Environmental portraits and documentary scenes

  • 50mm: Natural everyday perspective

  • 85mm: Classic head-and-shoulders portraits

  • 100mm: Tight portraits and flattering compression

Photographers can move quickly between these perspectives without changing lenses or stepping significantly closer to the subject.

🌙 Constant f/2.8 Aperture

The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture remains available throughout the entire zoom range. This provides consistent exposure while zooming, improved low-light capability and excellent control over depth of field.

At 85mm to 100mm, the combination of f/2.8 and telephoto compression produces strong subject separation and smooth, attractive backgrounds.

🔍 Excellent Optical Performance

The 15-element, 13-group design incorporates:

  • One XLD low-dispersion element

  • Two LD low-dispersion elements

  • Three GM glass-molded aspherical elements

These specialized elements help control chromatic aberration, distortion and other optical imperfections throughout the zoom range.

Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating minimizes flare and ghosting while maintaining excellent contrast in backlit conditions.

⚡ High-Speed VXD Autofocus

Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear motor provides fast, accurate and quiet autofocus. Its responsive tracking is well suited to children, pets, candid portraits and subjects moving naturally through a scene.

The lens supports compatible Nikon functions including Eye-Detection AF, Hybrid AF, continuous tracking and manual-focus override.

🌼 Excellent Close-Focusing Performance

At 35mm, the lens focuses as close as approximately 22cm and provides a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:3.3.

This makes it useful for food, tabletop photography, flowers, products and event details. The combination of close focusing and an f/2.8 aperture can create dramatic images with smooth background blur.

At 100mm, it focuses as close as approximately 65cm and provides a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:5.9.

🎒 Remarkably Compact and Lightweight

The Nikon Z-mount version measures approximately 121.5mm long and weighs only about 575g.

Its compact size makes it significantly easier to carry than many traditional portrait and event zooms. It balances comfortably on Nikon Z cameras and is well suited to travel, handheld photography and gimbal use.

🎥 Excellent for Hybrid Creators

The 35-100mm range is useful for interviews, portraits, documentary footage, product demonstrations and cinematic details. Quiet VXD autofocus helps minimize distracting operating noise.

The lens does not include optical Vibration Compensation, but it can benefit from the in-body stabilization available in compatible Nikon Z cameras or from an external support system.

💻 Tamron Lens Utility Compatibility

A built-in connector allows the lens to communicate directly with Tamron Lens Utility software without requiring a separate dock.

Compatible functions may include:

  • Firmware updates

  • Focus-ring direction adjustments

  • Manual-focus response settings

  • Focus-preset functions

  • A-B focus transitions

  • AF/MF switching customization

  • Additional still and video controls

Available functions may vary according to the connected camera, firmware and software version.

🛡️ Designed for Everyday Assignments

Moisture-resistant construction provides added confidence when working outdoors. The front element’s fluorine coating repels moisture and oil while making fingerprints and dirt easier to remove.

Smoothly operating zoom and focus rings provide precise, comfortable control during extended sessions.

  • Family and lifestyle photography

  • Senior and graduation portraits

  • Travel photography

  • Weddings and events

  • Candid and documentary work

  • Food and tabletop photography

  • Interviews and cinematic video

⚖️ How Does It Compare?

Compared with the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 VXD

The 35-150mm provides a brighter aperture at its wide end and substantially more telephoto reach. The 35-100mm is dramatically smaller and lighter, making it easier to carry for travel and everyday portrait photography.

Compared with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2

The 28-75mm begins wider and is more versatile for landscapes, groups and general event coverage. The 35-100mm provides greater portrait reach and stronger compression at its long end.

Compared with the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S

The Nikon begins considerably wider and extends farther, making it more versatile in good light. The Tamron offers a brighter constant f/2.8 aperture for improved low-light performance and shallower depth of field.

Compared with Carrying Several Prime Lenses

Individual primes may offer brighter apertures, but the Tamron covers several classic portrait perspectives without requiring a lens change. It provides an excellent balance of speed, convenience and portability.
