Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD is an exceptionally versatile full-frame telephoto zoom for Sony mirrorless cameras. Beginning at a natural 50mm perspective and extending to a powerful 400mm, it covers portraits, travel, sports, wildlife and close-up subjects with one portable lens.

Its 8x zoom range, fast VXD autofocus, Vibration Compensation and half-macro capability provide substantially more flexibility than a conventional 100-400mm telephoto zoom.

📷 From Normal Perspective to Super-Telephoto

Most long telephoto zooms begin at 100mm or 150mm. The Tamron starts at 50mm, making it far more useful for nearby subjects, environmental portraits and everyday scenes.

Its range includes:

  • 50mm: Natural perspective and full-length portraits

  • 85-135mm: Traditional portrait compositions

  • 200mm: Events, performances and nearby action

  • 300-400mm: Wildlife, sports and distant subjects

This flexibility can reduce the need to change between a standard and telephoto lens.

🦅 Powerful 400mm Reach

At 400mm, the lens can isolate birds, wildlife, athletes, aircraft and distant landscape details.

When used on a compatible Sony APS-C camera or in APS-C crop mode, it provides a field of view similar to approximately 75-600mm on full frame.

⚡ High-Speed VXD Autofocus

Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear motor provides fast, precise and quiet autofocus throughout the extensive zoom range.

The lens supports compatible Sony functions including Eye AF, subject recognition and continuous tracking. Its responsive performance makes it well suited to unpredictable wildlife and fast-moving sports.

✋ Built-In Vibration Compensation

Tamron’s VC system helps reduce the visible effects of camera shake when photographing handheld. Stabilization is especially important near 400mm, where even small movements can affect image sharpness.

VC also assists when using slower shutter speeds in challenging light and helps produce steadier handheld video.

🌼 Half-Macro Close-Up Capability

At 50mm, the lens focuses as close as approximately 25cm and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.

This allows flowers, food, products and other small subjects to fill a substantial portion of the frame while retaining a natural perspective.

At 400mm, it focuses as close as approximately 1.5 meters and provides a useful 1:4 reproduction ratio with a comfortable working distance for insects and small wildlife.

🔍 Advanced Optical Performance

The sophisticated 24-element, 18-group optical design incorporates XLD, LD and hybrid aspherical elements to control chromatic aberration, distortion and color fringing.

Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating suppresses flare and ghosting, helping images maintain excellent contrast and natural color in difficult lighting.

🎒 Portable for Its Extensive Range

Despite reaching 400mm, the lens weighs approximately 1,155g and accepts compact 67mm filters.

Its moderate size makes it practical for handheld wildlife photography, travel and hiking. A zoom-lock mechanism helps prevent unwanted barrel extension while the camera is being carried.

🎛️ Customizable Controls

The lens includes practical controls for both photography and video:

  • Focus Set button

  • AF/MF focus-mode switch

  • Vibration Compensation controls

  • Custom Mode selector

  • Zoom-lock switch

  • Connector for Tamron Lens Utility

Functions can be customized to suit different shooting styles and assignments.

🎥 Excellent for Outdoor Video

The broad range allows video creators to move from natural perspectives to tightly framed distant subjects. Quiet VXD autofocus and Vibration Compensation support handheld wildlife, sports and documentary footage.

For extended recording near 400mm, a tripod or monopod can provide additional stability.

💻 Tamron Lens Utility Compatibility

The lens can connect directly to Tamron Lens Utility without requiring a separate dock.

Compatible functions may include:

  • Firmware updates

  • Focus-ring direction and response adjustments

  • Focus-preset functions

  • A-B focus transitions

  • Focus Set button assignments

  • Additional photography and video controls

Available functions may vary according to the connected camera, firmware and software version.

🛡️ Ready for Outdoor Assignments

Moisture-resistant construction provides added confidence when photographing outdoors. The front element’s fluorine coating repels moisture and oil while making fingerprints and dirt easier to remove.

An optional Tamron tripod mount can improve balance when using a tripod or monopod. Its foot is compatible with many Arca-Swiss-style support systems.

  • Outdoor sports

  • Aviation and motorsports

  • Equestrian photography

  • Portrait and lifestyle photography

⚖️ How Does It Compare?

Compared with the Tamron 50-300mm VC VXD

Both lenses begin at 50mm and provide half-macro capability. The 50-400mm adds another 100mm of reach, while the 50-300mm is smaller and considerably lighter.

Compared with a Traditional 100-400mm Zoom

A 100-400mm may be slightly more compact, but the Tamron’s 50mm starting point makes it far more versatile for portraits, nearby subjects and everyday photography.

Compared with the Tamron 150-500mm VC VXD

The 150-500mm provides another 100mm of maximum reach for small and distant wildlife. The 50-400mm begins dramatically wider and is easier to use as a general-purpose telephoto zoom.

Compared with a 70-200mm f/2.8 Zoom

A 70-200mm f/2.8 offers superior low-light performance and stronger background separation. The 50-400mm begins wider, provides twice the maximum reach and offers greater overall versatility outdoors.
