Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Full-Frame Lens for Sony E

The Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is a fast, professional-featured ultra-wide prime for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Combining an expansive 105.6° field of view with a bright f/1.8 aperture, it excels at astrophotography, landscapes, architecture, interiors, environmental portraits, and cinematic video.

High-resolution optics, responsive autofocus, extensive physical controls, and an integrated information display make it an impressive alternative to considerably more expensive ultra-wide lenses.

⚡ Key Benefits

  • Ultra-wide 16mm full-frame coverage

  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture

  • Excellent for astrophotography and low light

  • Fast, quiet STM autofocus

  • Supports Sony face- and eye-detection AF

  • Integrated lens information display

  • Clickable or de-clicked aperture control

  • Two customizable function buttons

  • Advanced 15-element, 12-group optics

  • Close focusing down to 0.27m

  • Dust-resistant construction

  • 77mm filter thread

Fast f/1.8 Aperture

The large f/1.8 maximum aperture gathers considerably more light than typical ultra-wide zooms. This allows faster shutter speeds and lower ISO settings when photographing stars, nighttime landscapes, events, interiors, and available-light scenes.

A nine-blade diaphragm also produces smooth background blur when working close to a subject.

Expansive Ultra-Wide Perspective

With its 105.6° angle of view, the 16mm focal length is ideal for dramatic landscapes, architecture, real estate, expansive interiors, and environmental storytelling.

Unlike many specialized ultra-wide lenses, its conventional front design accepts standard 77mm screw-in filters.

High-Resolution Optical Design

The lens uses 15 elements arranged in 12 groups to deliver strong detail and contrast across the full-frame image area. Specialized optical elements and HD Nano multilayer coatings help control chromatic aberration, distortion, flare, and ghosting.

This advanced design makes the lens suitable for demanding high-resolution Sony cameras.

Fast and Quiet Autofocus

An STM stepping motor with lead-screw drive provides quick, accurate, and quiet focusing. Support for compatible Sony face- and eye-detection modes helps simplify portraits, events, video, and everyday photography.

Internal focusing maintains the lens’s physical length and balance during operation.

Professional Handling

An integrated information display provides useful shooting information at a glance. The physical aperture ring can be operated with clicks for still photography or de-clicked for smooth, silent exposure adjustments during video recording.

Two customizable function buttons place frequently used camera or focusing controls directly on the lens barrel.

Built for Video

The ultra-wide field of view is useful for gimbal work, interiors, establishing shots, and environmental vlogging. Quiet autofocus and smooth aperture control further support professional video production.

  • Astrophotography and night landscapes

  • Landscape and travel photography

  • Architecture and real estate

  • Interior photography

  • Environmental portraits

  • Wedding and event establishing shots

  • Vlogging and cinematic video

  • High-resolution Sony full-frame cameras

How It Compares

Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 vs. Viltrox 14mm f/4 Air

The 16mm is more than two stops faster and offers more advanced physical controls, making it significantly better for astrophotography and professional video. The 14mm is wider, much smaller, lighter, and more affordable.

Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 vs. Ultra-Wide Zooms

An ultra-wide zoom provides flexible framing, but most are slower or considerably more expensive. The Viltrox emphasizes low-light performance, optical quality, and creative depth of field.

Full Frame vs. APS-C

On a Sony full-frame camera, the lens delivers its complete 16mm ultra-wide view. On an APS-C camera, it provides an angle of view similar to a 24mm lens—useful for landscapes, street photography, and video.
